All The Pretty Horses Book Review

 Genre: Adventure, Romance

Author: Cormac McCarthy

Plot:
John Grady Cole makes a decision at his grandfather's funeral. His whole life was his grandfather's ranch, and with his passing, the ranch is to be sold. In the year 1949, the Great American West is shrinking, and there is no longer a place in this country for a young cowboy like Cole. So he and his best friend, Lacey Rawlins, saddle up and head south, across the border into Mexico, a land still of wild horses, ranches, and cowboys.
But Cole and Rawlins soon discover this is not the simple and easy life they hoped for. Forging farther into the unknown land, the intrepid pair become entangled in a web of right vs wrong, forbidden romance, freedom, imprisonment, danger, intrigue, and death.

Alex's Opinion:
I read this book in my high school AP Language class, senior year, and it was one of the first "classics" books I've been made to read that I truly enjoyed. Cormac McCarthy's writing is fierce and beautiful. The imagery transports you into the old west, with sweeping vistas, thundering herds of wild horses, the smell of dust, the heat of the sun on your skin. The plot itself has layers, creating an entwined story line, and delivering powerful messages. The emotion of the characters feels real- their actions are raw and human- this is no gilded "happily ever after" tale.

Who would like it:
If you like the "Old West/Cowboy" genre, this one is genuine and realistic. If you haven't read "classics" before because they seemed "boring", and mostly read books like Harry Potter (not that I don't love the Harry Potter series- I reread all seven last summer), try this one out- the elevated quality and depth of writing may be your new favorite!
