Hunger Games Book Review

Genre: Adventure, Science Fiction

Author: Susanne Collins

Plot:
It is 74 years since the thirteen Districts rebelled against the Capital. 74 years since the Capital obliterated the entire thirteenth District, and 74 years since the Capital instated the Hunger Games to brutally remind the remaining twelve Districts of what happens to rebellious citizens.
Katniss Everdeen scrapes a living for her mother and little sister, Primrose, in the impoverished and militantly controlled mining town of District 12. Each year she, along with every other boy and girl between the ages twelve and eighteen, must face the Reaping, a drawing of names, one boy and one girl from each district, that decides who must fight to the death for the entertainment of the Capital in the Hunger Games. This year's reaping holds a new terror for Katniss, for Primrose has just turned twelve. When Primrose's name is drawn, Katniss volunteers in her place, and joins the young man Peeta Mellark as District Twelve's "tributes" to the 74th Hunger Games. Together, they are whisked away to the Capital for preparations. Joining them is Haymitch a drunken old man, winner of the 50th Hunger Games, and their mentor.
Katniss must try to prepare as best as possible for the bloody tournament ahead, not only physically, but mentally as well. If she can win over the hearts of the citizens, they will sponsor her survival, and she must also be wary of becoming close to Peeta, for their can be only one winner in this mad fight against her competitors, the forces of nature, and the Capital.

Opinion:
This is a gripping book. The writing is smooth and natural, and the plot line is so intense that its hard to put down. The characters are deep and well rounded. The book is written in first person from Katniss' perspective, and her thoughts and feelings are detailed and immersive. The antagonist is truly evil, and his character comes out more in the rest of the trilogy. The pacing is well done- transitioning between action and character development smoothly. I've read this series twice now, and enjoyed it both times.

Who would like it:
First off, I should say this book, and the series, is very violent. It deals directly with mortal combat between children and young adults. That said, the writing is very well done, and the most intriguing parts are the power, emotion, and mental struggles between the characters. If you like dystopian future style books, this one is realistic and intense. This is not so much a science fiction book as an action/drama book.
