Futureshocks Book Review

Genre: Sci-fi

Editor: Lou Anders

Plot
Well, Futureshocks doesn't really have a plot. It's an anthology you see, a collection of stand-alone short stories by some of the best science fiction writers in the field. Some of these stories explore lighthearted questions - how exactly do you dispose of something when none of the smart appliances and waste receptacles will accept your refuse? Some are a bit darker - how do you break free of the slip to stop the brick thrower? It's hard to place others - how would one get buy if they couldn't afford the pills that eliminated the need for sleep? Imagine workaholic American 'ideals' but with no need for sleep...now imagine falling behind because you're, well, broke.

Brian's Opinion
I read this book because a friend heard me casually mention that I enjoyed science fiction. It was a great recommendation; I haven't read a particularly large amount of science fiction, and Futureshocks felt like a great general introduction to the genre. Some of the stories were incredibly funny, others, well, scary.

Who might like it
As an anthology, there is something in here for everyone I think. While science fiction is the genre, many of the issues explored could be extended beyond the genre, and I think that many people who might not normally read sci-fi would like some, at least, of the stories within.
