Monstrous Regiment Book Review

Genre: Fantasy, Sci-Fi (you'll find it often in the sci-fi section, but for the life of me I can't figure out why)

Author: Terry Pratchett

Plot
wopwopwopwopwopwopwop. The helicopters thump into hearing range, startling the soldiers in the jungle below. Maladict, the vampire, looks up - 'el-tee, you hear that? It's Charlie!' You see, Maladict has sworn off drinking blood, and has replaced his 'addiction' with a more, er, socially correct one - coffee. Except someone stole his coffee. Hence the hallucinations. Man, they need to get him coffee fast before he starts biting necks.....

Maladict is just one of the fresh-faced (oddly so) recruits who have joined the Ins-and-Outs, as Polly...sorry, Oliver had learned. She...he has also learned to put a sock in a choice location, talk rudely, and scratch where it ain't polite. Together they make the Monstrous Regiment, intent on killing the enemy (why are they fighting anyway) and generally not getting killed. Turns out the recruits aren't the only ones with secrets...

Brian's Opinion
Man, I'd been reading too many serious books lately and so picked up this Pratchett Discworld book. Pratchett has yet to disappoint, and Monstrous Regiment was no exception. The hilarious hallucination scenes with Maladict were just one laugh-yielding part of the story, and it was refreshing to meet an entire new cast of characters who ultimately clash with the Ankh-Morpork leadership (good 'old Sam Vimes). Although 'clash' probably isn't the right word. It's complicated.

Who Might Like it
If you like to laugh while reading, I'd definitely recommend this story. If you're already a fan of Pratchett, and want something off the main Ankh-Morpork storyline, but still want great characters and plot, then, YES.
