The Thief Book Review

Genre: Children's Fiction, Adventure     Author: Megan Whalen Turner

Plot:
Just a year ago you were living high and worry free, the best thief the world has ever since your namesake, the legendary Eugenides, son of the Earth, and said to have stolen lightning from the gods. "I can steal anything" you boasted, and pride was downfall and you bragged about pilfering the king's seal to an agent to the empire. Now you languish in the King's cells for the rest of your life, which, given the conditions, doesn't look to long. Then one day there is a flash of hope- the King's adviser, the Magus, fetches you from the cells and makes you a proposition- die in a prison cell, or attempt to steal a mythical gift of the gods from its newly discovered hiding place- you boast again that "I can steal anything" but secretly you wonder if you might have lived longer if you stayed in the prison...

Alex's Review:
Over thanksgiving weekend I visited my parents and picked this book up again- I haven't read it in years, and am delighted to report that it is just as exciting, original, and well written as ever. This book is a Newberry Award winner, and I can see why. The fictional setting, a Medieval Greek  city and countryside is painted like a stunning picture for the reader, rich in detail and realism. The characters are likewise very well done- the majority of the book focuses on detailed character development through the main characters (Gen) eyes, and is very satisfying and entertaining to read Gen's snide and witty remarks and thoughts regarding his entourage of guards. I would recommend this book to most anyone- its very well written, but easy and engaging to read, especially if you love adventure and excitement!
