Artemis Fowl (Book one Review)

Genre: Sci-Fi, Children's Fiction

Author: Eoin Colfer

Plot:
Artemis Fowl is twelve years old, and would benefit from some parental supervision. With his father missing and presumed dead for more than a year, and his grief stricken mother retreated into a delusional world of denial, the fate of the Fowl Family Name rest on his shoulders- a bridle Fowl accepts readily, as he sets forth to uphold his ancestry in the way of his ancestors did- through crime. And this child mastermind has set his sights on pulling a job bigger than any before- he is after the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
With the help of his forever loyal bodyguard, Butler, Artemis devises a trap to catch a fairy to hold for a one metric ton gold ransom.
Holly is just such a LepRecon (although she's really an elf- LepRecon is just a job). Along with most every other fairy in the world, she lives underground, hiding from the humans who took over the surface thousands of years ago. But that's the past, and the fairies are not the kind to hold grudges, and in fact have been doing quite well underground, developing technology far exceeding that of mankind. And Holly is betting her life on that technology when her magic runs out while tracking a rouge troll above ground. From there, her day only goes from bad to worse when she is ambushed and kidnapped by a crazy mastermind human, calling himself Fowl.
Its an all out battle of minds as Artemis pits his guile against the Fairy kind in a one of a kind showdown- but has he really thought of everything? One false move, and his plan will collapse like a card tower, right on top of him, and the few people in the world he actually cares for.

Alex's Opinion:
I started reading this series when I was in middle school, and I just read the final book when it came out a couple months ago. I'll say this, it takes a talented author to get someone hooked on their series for 8 years straight. I really enjoyed the first book, reviewed here- the character development is fantastic, the writing witty, humerus, and very original. You'll love to root for (or hate) each unique personality. Artemis Fowl is a fantastic character- deep, and always growing as he grows up throughout the series. The dynamics between everyone in the series are a pleasure to read. These are very well written books, and I've read and enjoyed each one multiple times.

Who would like it:
These books are great at sparking an interest in reading, and because they form a series, the spark turns into a blaze of awesomeness. There is science, technology, magic, time travel, action, humor, mystery, and suspense- something for everyone. Great fiction.
