War of the Worlds Book Review

Genre: Sci-Fi            Author: H.G. Wells

Its a day like any other on the bucolic English countryside- birds are singing, the sun is out, and there are no signs that today will bring the destruction to mankind- until an alien capsule crashes into the hills outside of town. As everyone gathers around the strange capsule, hoping to glimpse what is inside, they have little idea that its contents will bring the utter destruction of the world around them. The war to come is hardly a war at all- that would imply man stands a chance at winning.

Alex's Opinion
H.G. Wells wrote some of the earliest science fiction, with War of the Worlds published over a century ago. The writing style is unlike any other science fiction I've read- written more like a chronicler of strange events, with the narrator experiencing a strange new reality, much like the reader is. This perspective was well written and fun to read. Another facet of this gem of literature is the 19th century parlance, which is delightful to read in the setting of science fiction. On top of all this, the plot is well constructed and original.

Who Would Like it
This is a book for fans of any genre. It has mystery, suspense, war, adventure, aliens... well I guess it doesn't have romance, but if you only read romance novels, you should give this one a go anyways- maybe you'll fall in love with the charm of 19th century writing styles!
