Shade's Children Book Review

Genre: Science Fiction

Author: Garth Nix

Plot:
Golden-eyes is about to take his own life- its either that, or be captured by the Overlords, doomed to live a very short life at the Meat Factory, a life he only just escaped. Moments from death or capture, he is saved by a mysterious group of kids, who call themselves Shade's Children. Golden-eyes joins the ragged band of escapees from the Meat Factory, and soon finds himself listening and following Shade as well, becoming one of Shade's Children, despite Shade's... not-exactly-human nature. But Shade is the only "adult" in existence after the Change. Golden-eyes soon discovers his new brothers and sisters are like him- they have Change talents, talents that let them escape from the Meat Factory before their 14th and last birthday. Under Shade's direction, Golden-eyes and the other children strike forth into the Overlord dominated ruins of the world, seeking to reverse the Change. But can Shade really have the children's best interest at heart, if he, himself, doesn't even have one?

Alex's Opinion:
I really enjoyed this sci-fi book because it was very "no-holds-barred" and recklessly imaginative. It is often dark, and intense, but this makes the plot all the more gripping. What I enjoyed most was the portrayals of how different people react to unique situations, how they cope with a uniquely apocalyptic world. The plot deals with coming to terms with humanity in an inhumane world, living without a life expectancy, loving in a world without example.

Who would like it:
First off, this a somewhat dark book, so use discretion with young readers. Fans of the whole "children surviving in a dystopian future" (Hunger Games, Maze Runner, The Giver, ect) will enjoy this. Fans of world building may also enjoy. I've read it multiple times, and it was enjoyed it each time.
